the Concrete Decor staff got up
extra early and road-tripped to Eastern Oregon
to attend Decorative Concrete Events 2008,
hosted by Ken Heitzmann, owner of Decorative
Concrete Systems. This year’s edition of the
annual two-day event in Milton-Freewater, Ore.,
featured live sponsor demos from AmeriPolish,
EnCounter, L.M. Scofield, Miracote, Smith Paints,
Stegmeier and White Mountain. There was a
seminar presented by One Day Floors and a talk
on countertops given by Doug Bannister, owner
of The Stamp Store.
For two days, we wandered from one demonstration
to the next, watching and learning
about how to clean, stencil, stamp, broadcast
color and chips, vertically color and texture
and much, much more. Lunch was a welcome
break, especially since the smell of slow-roasting
barbeque had filled the air all morning.
After the first full day of learning, we
participated in a concrete trivia game,
and enjoyed dinner and a comedy act at
The Marcus Whitman Hotel & Conference
Center in Walla Walla, Wash. That evening,
teams were chosen for a contractor
competition to be held the following day.
Friday held more demos and a stunning
display of concrete artwork, created by
the teams in only an hour and a half with
basic tool kits of decorative supplies.
