Concrete artisan Tom Ralston has come
a long way from his years as a teenage
surfer, and in his new book, “Cast-In-
Place Concrete Countertops,” he reveals
a lot of what he’s learned.
The book offers step-by-step instructions
on how to cast concrete countertops
in place, using forms and mix design to
best advantage. It also covers decorative
flourishes, including everything from
stains and dyes to glass bits and
permanent markers. The book showcases
an extensive gallery of Ralston’s projects
as well as a chapter on marketing, written, like the rest of the
book, in Ralston’s easy, conversational prose. Autobiographical
anecdotes give the reader a strong sense of Ralston’s roots as a
concrete artisan.
“Cast-In-Place Concrete Countertops” is published by Schiffer
Books. You can find it at Concrete Decor’s online bookstore.

In her book, “Creative Concrete Ornaments for the
Garden,” Sherri Warner Hunter starts with the basics,
but works her way to something special.
The author of “Creative Concrete” begins with a chapter
on the essentials of concrete, then moves through
casting molds, construction
techniques and surface
treatments. The largest chapter,
“Projects,” is broken down
into beginning, intermediate
and advanced categories. It
offers how-to instructions for
leaf bowls, birdbaths, sunface
panels, garden torches,
fountains, a “puzzle patio” and
more.
“Creative Concrete Ornaments
for the Garden” is published by Lark Books and can be found
at Concrete Decor’s online bookstore.
